Lake District Crags
Badger Rock has a mix of volcanic tuff (Rhyolitic Tuff) and other rock. This isolated boulder is located near Kentmere Hall and is in a private sheet field.
Although some of the boulders on Badger Rock are quite high for beginners, the location offers varied climbing (some slab, overhangs and traverses) with great views for those with confidence to reach the top. This is a lovely setting with nice flat landings which make Badger Rock a popular area.
The boulder has a range of problems from VB-V7, and a mix of different types of bouldering, from dynos, traverses, crack climbs, a horizontal start, high ball slabs, a mono, crimps, big jugs, broken off flakes - a lot of different moves and rock features. There is a great V3 traverse, leading around the boulder and finishes in a vertical line to the top. Whilst the problems are varied and the rocks grippy it might not be the perfect place to start for a first timer. For those with a little more experience, it is a great place to realise that you can fall from higher than you think and be fine, and develop your mental strength seeing as the cruxes tend to be towards the bottom.
Grades: VB to V7
The area of Brant Fell offers some crimpy and technical climbing as well as lots of slab. The rock type is shale. The low wall has a large range of boulder problems with a range of grades and problems from V0+ to V6. There is an interesting 6C traverse across the entire rock, as well as one boulder problem involving a mono. There are numerous short straight-up problems all ending with the same easy decent from the top. The viewpoint, which overlooks Lake Windemere, is gorgeous - particularly at sunset and superb for when you lunch breaks and chilling. An incredible site not to be missed!
Grades: V0+ to V6
The rock is a cool spot with great views over the Lake District and some varied routes in terms of difficulty and style. With a range of climbing routes with difference features and levels of difficulty from chimneys, jugs, traverses and some crimpy routes, this location enables a range of interesting climbs on the rock with good landings.
This is a good location to learn how to set up anchors and placing equipment, as there is enough space at the top of the cliff to sit, watch and learn what needs to be done.
